Watch the performance on this page at the scheduled date and time. This performance won’t be available to stream afterward on demand.

On Facebook, trombonist with the Orchestra Nick Mesler says:

"Next Saturday (September 24th) at 7:30 PM in Peter J. Sharp Theater, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra will be performing Duke Ellington’s full masterpiece, Black, Brown, and Beige, along with a few other charts from the Ellington band book. Three of those additional charts are never-before played rarities that I transcribed and arranged myself through hours of dedicated work with the few recordings that exist of them. Being able to hear those performed for the first time, in addition to hearing the rarely-performed Black, Brown, and Beige, will truly be something special, and I hope you all will consider attending in support of this tremendous concert. I’ll be playing lead trombone with the wonderful @jazzmatic.charles and @ilaimacaggimusic in the section. This is only part 1 of my Ellington debuts, so stay tuned for the full concert of rarities I’ve prepared in May!"

David Berger: The Ellington Effect Harlem Speaks

The Ellington Effect workshops take place once a month, and David picks a different Ellington composition to analyze for each one.  In about two hours, he talks through the piece note by note, line by line, analyzing the piece at both macro and micro levels.

David Berger has studied the music of Duke Ellington for over 50 years, and has transcribed over 500 Ellington and Strayhorn arrangements and compositions.  Because of this, he is able to make connections to Ellington's other pieces, talk about trends and eras in Ellington's writing, and discuss the influences of changing personnel on the music over time.

At the end of each workshop, David answers questions for a half hour or so.  These are always lively and fascinating, as workshop attendees tend to include some highly knowledgable Ellingtonians as well as plenty of intelligent musicians who ask insightful questions.
