Happy Birthday, Duke


Edward Kennedy Ellington was born this day, 29 April, 1899.


You can join the celebrations at WKCR, Columbia University Radio in New York which will be broadcasting Duke's music for the next twenty-four hours.

    I recall seeing Duke wearing that jacket during an engagement at the Colonial Tavern in Toronto. At the end of the first set a willowy blonde sidled over to the piano bench just as Duke was getting up. "Oh, I LOVE that jacket," said she. "I stayed up all night weaving it just for you," said Duke.
